Hulu is revealing more about the upcoming Interior Chinatown series, so here’s what you need to know about this new crime comedy!

Hulu has been doing a great job with their original series, mostly in the comedy or crime genres. They’re now combining it together for this quirky show, set to debut on November 19. So here’s what to know about it!

What is Interior Chinatown about?

The show centers around Willis Wu, an aspiring actor who’s sadly always cast as an extra in various shows needing random Asians in the cast. That includes a police procedural called Black & White with Willis wanting to be a star.

He gets his wish when he witnesses a real crime and meets Detective Lana Lee. Lana shares she’s been tracking a criminal conspiracy for years and that Willis’ long-missing brother was working for her. As he helps her out, Willis soon gets to play the lead in a major crime story while discovering the shocking secrets of his past.

"Interior Chinatown follows Yang’s Willis Wu, a background character trapped in a police procedural titled Black & White. Relegated to the background, Willis goes through the motions of his on-screen job, waiting tables, dreaming about a world beyond Chinatown, and aspiring to be the lead of his own story. When Willis inadvertently becomes a witness to a crime, he begins to unravel a criminal web in Chinatown while discovering his own family’s buried history and what it feels like to be in the spotlight."

The trailer promises a wild meta bit of an actor getting involved in a real crime story and some nutty martial arts action to boot to make it quite promising.

It’s based on a book

The show is based on the award-winning novel of the same name by Charles Yu. The book was written as a screenplay and thus easy for Yu himself to adapt it. He’s aided by Taika Waititi as the Oscar-winning writer/director seems an easy fit for the tale.

Speaking at the TCA press tour this summer, cast member Ronny Chieng said that Yu’s presence is key to the show working.

"Thank Buddha that the guy who wrote the book is showrunning the show. It’s a complicated book that, luckily, the person who fully understands it is the person who’s translating it to TV."

Thus, fans of the book will be happy to know Yu will make it as faithful as possible.

Interior Chinatown cast

Jimmy O. Yang takes on the key role of Willis, a nice step up from his supporting roles in Silicon Valley and Space Force. Chloe Bennett of Agents of SHIELD fame plays Lee, with Ronny Chieng as Willis’ friend. It looks like a fun mix, including the in-show actors of Black & White getting involved.

  • Jimmy O. Yang as Willis Wu
  • Ronny Chieng as Fatty Choi
  • Chloe Bennet as Detective Lana Lee
  • Sullivan Jones as Miles Turner
  • Lisa Gilroy as Sarah Green
  • Diana Lin as Lily Wu
  • Archie Kao as Uncle Wong
  • Tzi Ma as Joe Wu
  • Lauren Tom as Betty
  • Chris Pang as Older Brother
  • Maury Sterling as Carrey
  • Spencer Neville as McDonough

When does Interior Chinatown premiere?

All ten episodes of the series drop at once on Hulu on November 19. That promises a fun binge to spark up the streamer and should make Interior Chinatown a fun meta-action comedy to enjoy.
