A new Harlan Coben crime drama is coming to Netflix in 2025 but it won't be set in the UK!
By Sabrina Reed
Harlan Coben dramas have become a staple at Netflix and for good reason. Fans of crime fiction love delving into live-action adaptations of books they know and love or have at least read before. It helps that Coben has a long backlist of titles to mine, so it's no surprise that yet another series based on his work is coming to the streamer in 2025 and, no, I'm not referring to Missing You which premieres on New Year's Day. The series I'm talking about is called Atrapados.
As you can see from the title, which means trapped, the crime drama is a Spanish-language series. For fans of the Coben shows, it'll be a departure from the UK-setting which has been the main locale for the adaptations despite the books they're based on taking place in the U.S. This time, the mystery will be set in Argentina, and it's an adaptation of Caught.
Published in 2010, the story centers on the disappearance of Haley McWaid, a 17 year old from suburban New Jersey with a bright future. She's the captain of the lacrosse team and will be college-bound in a year, so when she doesn't return home one night, her parents know something horrible must have happened. They suffer through three months of silence, with no word on her whereabouts, thinking the worst.
Enter Wendy Tynes, a reporter dedicated to identifying and apprehending sexual predators. She does so through her news program, Caught in the Act, and works closely with the police and her team to publicly shame and expose the men who commit these crimes. But when she encounters Dan Mercer, a social worker known to be a friend to at -risk teens, she finds that his story is more complicated than she thought.
Atrapados is an updated version of Caught. Soledad Villamil plays Ema Garay, a reporter whose medium is digital journalism. She catches criminals who slip through the cracks of the Bariloche City justice system. When a 16 year old girl goes missing, she dives into an investigation of her own but meeting Leo Mercer, a social worker who becomes the prime suspect in the case, forces her to confront her own truth as she pieces together what happened to the teen.
Coben is an executive producer on the series. It also stars Juan Minujín, Alberto Ammann, Matías Recalt, Fernán Mirás, Mike Amigorena, and Carmela Rivero. A premiere date has yet to be announced though we can expect six episodes to be available upon release.
