Major spoilers for Citadel: Diana episode 2 ahead

War is knocking at the door in Citadel: Diana hence episode 2's apt title. But this is exactly what Edo Zani wanted, right? When Diana arrived at his apartment with the French half of the "apple" in hand, it appeared like a gift. Last episode, Alex Moreau and Rainer Weber had amused each other with the idea that the weapon would be worse than the Trojan horse. And, while it hasn't reached those heights yet, its mere presence with Edo does trigger a small crisis for Manticore Italy or...rather his refusal of Cécile Martin's proposal does. I know, confusing, but this is the way of spy games. Let me explain.

Cécile's plotting turns deadly

Edo has made no secret of his disinterest in marrying Cécile. To him, he'd just be moving from being under his father's thumb to being under hers. He's also not a fan of her playing both sides by working secretly with Wolfgang Klein, the head of Manticore Germany, to reverse engineer Citadel technology while at the same time planning to cross him by entering into a marriage and alliance with Edo.

His father Ettore, ever understanding of the world they live in, failed to see the issue with Cécile's actions but is aware of her ruthlessness far more than Edo seems to be. Her cyber attack against their agency, and vicious assault against their spies, after she was refused did not surprise him but he knew he'd have to humble himself before her and accept less than satisfactory terms to get her to stand down. Edo, however, pitched a different idea.

Working off the knowledge that France had no intention of giving over their half of the "apple" in exchange for Germany's, he convinced Ettore--who is still in the dark about this weapon--to lie and bluff his way through the meeting with Cécile at Manticore's villainy lair from "Split in Two." She was convinced that Italy has the tech since she learned about what happened in Lugano square but under Edo's guidance, Ettore turned her attention to a new suspect: Wolfgang Klein.

It makes sense that he would cross her as that's exactly what she'd planned to do to him by introducing a hard to find flaw in the half they'd planned to trade. Edo had deduced that the tech is a small interception system that can shrink down to microscopic size but that the flaw caused it to malfunction and not work. What's France up to? It's not clear yet but Edo and Diana are setting a trap. Unfortunately, it came at the price of 12 dead Manticore agents and Sara's life being in danger.

Does Sara die in Citadel: Diana episode 2?

The tension rose between the sisters in "War" as they argued about the secrets Diana is keeping. Sara was so sure that Diana was hiding things from her that she pretended to go home in a whirlwind of anger only to direct a taxi cab to follow her vehicle. When that didn't work, she broke into her sister's apartment while she was out planting the weapon for Rainer to find.

Diana let her believe that she was getting one over on her while she watched from her phone as her sister combed through her apartment. It was harmless to her but Sara's duplicity unexpectedly put her in the line of fire during Cécile's attack since Diana's residence was the first place Manticore France's operatives were sent due to her part of the incident in Lugano.

When she got home, Diana found herself caught in a shootout. She panicked when she saw her sister's scarf lying on the floor in a room. Because of the heightened emotion, her Ménière's symptoms were triggered which kept her pinned behind the island in her kitchen. It looked as if she was going to lose this fight but she took her meds which quieted the ringing. She seemed ready to do what she must but then her apartment was empty.

Cécile had called off her agents, confirming that she'd accepted Ettore's version of events that placed Luca as a rogue spy who took France's half of the "apple" to sell to Germany. As Diana learned after receiving a call on her landline, Edo had swooped in to collect her sister during the attack. He stopped by Diana's apartment when she wouldn't pick up her phone, posed as her boyfriend, and took Sara out to dinner. She was none the wiser about the danger she was in.

Edo's quick thinking saved Sara's life and likely had the added benefit of decreasing Sara's belief that Diana was withholding something serious from her. A secret boyfriend falls more in line with the brand of normalcy that Diana is shooting for.

Diana, however, isn't out of the woods because while she's gained an ally in Edo, she may be acquiring an enemy in Ettore.

Ettore is on to Diana

At the end of "War," Ettore and Julia were watching the footage of Diana's interrogation. Matteo believes the story she spun about Luca wanting more for his life after having met a woman. She passed the lie detector test and that was enough for him. But it wasn't for Ettore. He doesn't know that Diana was trained by Gabriele to lock her feelings in a safe so as to always appear calm and collected, but he suspects something isn't right about her tale.

He's right to be suspicious. Diana killed Luca on the fly so the story she fed Matteo was pieced together. Supposedly Luca is in the wind, in possession of France's piece of the Citadel tech, and looking to sell it to get a new life for himself. It's quite the yarn. In episode 2, it's unclear if Ettore is suspicious because of his son's decision making and how neatly the lie Edo told him to sell to Cécile fits with Diana's statement on what happened in Lugano, but it's highly probable.

Edo and Diana's plan though is in full swing now. Rainer has the weapon, and Edo told Diana he made sure to make it easier for Germany to find the flaw in France's piece of the "apple." Their alliance hinges on Edo making it possible for her to leave Manticore and him getting what he wants which is to revolutionize the organization and make it an institution determined to make the world safer like they were both promised when they joined. How far will they go to make that happen? We'll have to watch and see.
