Amazon is making a major move that's going to effect users that enjoy their ad-supported streaming service, Freevee. I remember it's rebrand rollout like it was yesterday when the platform's name was changed from IMDbTV to its current moniker. Though that could be because the rebrand happened only two years ago and now, per Deadline, Freevee is being shut down. Why? Well, a spokesperson for Amazon shared the following:

"We have built Prime Video into a first-stop entertainment destination where customers can personalize their viewing experience by streaming exclusive Prime member entertainment produced by Amazon MGM Studios, licensed movies and series, content from other services as an add-on subscription, live sports, blockbuster movies and series to rent or buy, FAST Channels and the complete Amazon Freevee content offering. To deliver a simpler viewing experience for customers, we have decided to phase out Freevee branding. There will be no change to the content available for Prime members, and a vast offering of free streaming content will still be accessible for non-Prime members, including select originals from Amazon MGM Studios, a variety of licensed movies and series, and a broad library of FAST channels, all available on Prime Video."

Essentially, this comes down to redundancy. Prior to Amazon adding an ad-tier to their subscription offerings in January 2024, Freevee was where non-subscribers could watch select content (with ads) that Prime Video users had access to through their subscription. Now the company can simply allow that without having to tie it to a separate brand, it'll all be under the Prime Video umbrella.

As for Freevee originals, like Bosch: Legacy, they'll still be available to stream for free. They're not going to get locked in a vault but this does beg the question of whether Amazon will continue to make content like the titles produced for Freevee. Interested viewers didn't have to purchase a subscription to watch content they enjoyed for free with ads.

Will Amazon bother doing that once everything is under Prime Video or will there simply be a second window release for all of the streamer's originals going forward including new seasons of shows that were previously made for Freevee? This would mean non-subscribers would have to wait months to view content that had been ad-supported before this change. Thankfully, that won't be the case.

According to Deadline, Amazon will still be investing in the free, ad-supported content they currently produce. New episodes of their series streaming for free are on the way. All of this will remain in front of the paywall, it will now just have the label "Watch for Free" instead of Freevee. The change will happen in the territories where the platform is available in the U.S., the UK, Germany, and Austria.

So, if you've been looking forward to seeing the final season of Bosch: Legacy, don't worry. The crime drama is scheduled for a 2025 release as is its spin-off focused on cold case detective Renée Ballard, and they won't be released behind a paywall. If that changes, we'll keep you posted.

Here's a list of the Freevee, now "Watch for Free," shows that haven't ended:

  • Bosch: Legacy (final season in 2025)
  • Classified
  • Dinner with Parents
  • The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh
  • Uninterrupted's Top Class
  • Judy Justice
  • Hollywood Houselift with Jeff Lewis
