NCIS came back after a short week-long break with a case involving an attempted abduction that turned into more than the team anticipated. Plus, there was also a secondary mystery when Agent Knight came to work with a jacket that did not belong to her.

The case this week in "Knight and Day" appeared to involve a man named Freddy Martin, the CEO of a prominent defense company. He had been with his mistress when an unidentified man broke into his home. His mistress, Sheila, shot him, leading the team to investigate.

Eventually, they met Martin’s wife, Melinda, who knew about the affair and had thoughts about the intrusion into her home. While it did first appear that her husband was the target of the abduction, once the kidnapper’s phone was unlocked, the team learned Freddy’s wife was the target, not him.

When the kidnapper was identified, Knight noticed Melinda had a reaction to learning he was from Kansas City. The team looked into her background and discovered that before 2002, Melinda Martin didn’t exist.

What did NCIS learn about Melinda Martin after the attempted abduction?

They learned that her real name is April Day and she had been connected to a young man named Jason Marino, whose mother Carla was a figure in the mob back in their hometown. When Knight, who had been tasked to serve as protection detail until they could find who was targeting Melinda, was abducted along with Martin herself, she saw the abductors take samples of Melinda’s DNA.

It turned out that when Jason and Melinda attempted to run away before he was killed in an accident, Melinda had been pregnant. She turned to a local priest for help to figure out what to do about the baby. In order to protect her from Carla, the baby was put up for adoption.

Carla had used the DNA to find her granddaughter but luckily the team got to her location first. Parker, who had previous run-ins with Carla through past investigations, wasn’t able to nail her personally for the crimes committed in the case. However, it did appear that it might not be the last we see of her.

This was an enjoyable episode to watch and it also gave us a chance to see the team involved in a case that was not as high-intensity as usual. Plus, we did get hints that Jimmy may not be ready for the thought of Knight dating again, as evidenced when the team was trying to figure out where she obtained a mysterious jacket after a night of celebrating her sister’s graduation.

The next episode of NCIS, which will air on Monday, Dec. 2, focuses on Nick and we’re always excited to see what's in store with him. Until the next episode, you can catch up on previous episodes on Paramount+.
