NCIS has kept us guessing with its first two episodes of season 22, especially when it comes to who the culprit is. In this case, it involves the murder of Diego Barreto, a member of the Venezuelan security team who was an inside man for Director Leon Vance. But when Barreto is found dead before Vance can have talks with Admiral Carlos Mendoza, the team must quietly figure out what happened.

WARNING: Spoilers for NCIS season 22 are below.

Since no one knows Barreto worked for Vance, they have to keep quiet about his death. It becomes difficult when they have to get past reporters, especially a determined Robyn Kael. McGee and Palmer are able to successfully get Barreto’s body back to his hotel to make it look like he died there instead of at Vance’s office.

Things become further complicated when a second body is found. At this point, Kasie Hines had figured out their victim was poisoned. The second body found is identified as a hitman and he was likely the killer. But who exactly killed him?

Once they are able to investigate in the open, the team looks into one of the Venezuelan security detail’s men named Vega, who holds anti-American sentiments and might have a reason not to want the talks to happen. Eventually, though, they find out that he is actually a cover agent as well for the BND, which Vance is surprised to learn that his casual love interest, Lena Paulsen, is still a part of. Vega had an adjoining room with Barreto and heard a commotion.

He saw the hitman taking photos of the body and Vega killed him. While the talks seem to go on without a hitch, Kael comes back into play when it turns out she is part of Hezbollah and abducts Lena in an attempt to stop the talks. Hezbollah is using the area of the Caribbean to smuggle diamonds and a partnership between the U.S. and Venezuela could impede their piracy.

Luckily, Kasie was able to use Lena’s fitness watch to hack into her account and the team rescued her. Did the talks go on without a hitch? They did, but the team discovered that the Admiral himself had Barreto killed for having an affair with his wife.

Vance was successful in many ways, both on the work front and in his personal life. After having lost his wife and almost dying in the previous season due to being shot, we hope he is able to find happiness with Lena now that she is a little bit closer to home.

The season is already off to a great start and we’re looking forward to discovering more burning answers to questions we have, such as finding out more about Palmer and Knight’s relationship. Plus, who is Lily to Parker?

NCIS airs Mondays on CBS at 9/8c. Episodes are available the next day on Paramount+.
