Netflix's Kill Boksoon spinoff Mantis hits the streamer in 2025
For those who love action films, Netflix recently announced a new release serving as a spinoff of the 2023 film Kill Boksoon. While it will not be out until 2025, here is what we know so far about the new title, Mantis.
Before we get into the spinoff, what was Kill Boksoon about? The film focused on Gil Bok-soon, a contract killer who also lived as a single mother, which she struggled to balance considering her career.
Mantis will be set in the same universe, although it will focus on other Korean contract killers, who are known as Jae-yi, Mantis, and Dok-go. The film already has cast some of its characters in the form of Park Gyu-young from It’s Okay to Not Be Okay, Jo Woo-jin from Narco-Saints, and Yim Si-Wan from Misaeng: Incomplete Life.
Yim’s role as Mantis, whose name is Han-ul, was briefly mentioned in the original film as not being on assignment. However, in the sequel, he is set to return to his career as a contract killer.
Mantis is set to return while Park’s Jae-yi is in the midst of training. They are described as already having been acquainted, with the latter having her own complex feelings about Mantis, especially after having been ousted by MK Ent. In addition to getting to know Jae-yi, the film will introduce Jo’s Dok-go, who has retired but is set to take over as CEO of MK Ent. where they work.
In the synopsis for Mantis, it mentions that Mantis had worked with Gil Boksoon and had been on vacation during the events of Kill Boksoon. Upon his return, he discovers that he is not alone when it comes to trying to take the top spot in the hired killer industry. He also discovers that both Jae-yi and Dok-go are looking to make it to the top in their field.
The script for Mantis was co-written by Lee Tae-sung, and he will be directing after having been an assistant director for Kill Boksoon. He was the co-writer for the script alongside Byung Sung-hyun, who was the director for Kill Boksoon.
At the moment, Mantis is the working title for the film so that could change. However, it looks like this will be an excellent sequel to the original film. In the meantime, while production is ongoing and we’re waiting for more information on Mantis, you can stream Kill Boksoon on Netflix.
