One of Netflix’s best shows of 2024 will be coming back for another year, to the delight of crime fans!
Netflix is infamous for axing great shows after only one season, but they do make exceptions. Next January sees the second seasons of Night Agent and The Recruit and they are inclined to renew several buzzworthy hits.
Now, Netflix has delighted fans by giving a second season renewal for A Man on the Inside. The comedy from Michael Schur (The Good Place) had won widespread critical acclaim when it premiered on Netflix on November 21. Not only did it score star Ted Danson a Golden Globe nomination, but it has landed on the American Film Institute’s list of the best TV shows of 2024. Schur made a tongue-in-cheek statement on the renewal.
“We are thrilled to make another season of A Man on the Inside, starring young up-and-comer Ted Danson. From our partners at Netflix and Universal TV to the writers, cast, and crew, it’s a truly exceptional team of talented and lovely people, with one notable exception (young up-and-comer Ted Danson, who’s kind of a nightmare).”
Inspired by the Oscar-nominated documentary The Mole Agent, the series stars Danson as Charles, a widower who, wanting something to do in his life, answers an ad placed by private eye Julie (Lilah Richcreek Estrada). She needs someone to go undercover at a retirement home to investigate a possible thief. Charles gets into the role and soon bonds with the other retirees while also forging a new connection with his daughter Emily (Mary Elizabeth Ellis).
It’s fun to see the show return, even as fans wonder what Season 2 can be like.
What could season 2 of A Man on the Inside be about?
Without giving away too many spoilers, Season 1 had Charles figure out the retirement home mystery, which had a surprising end. He at first faced backlash from the other residents finding out who he was but they eventually came around to see Charles as a friend. The finale ended with Julie calling up Charles to offer him another job.
Schur had told the Hollywood Reporter he and the writers were already crafting ideas for a new season before the first one was finished.
“What you have at the end of the season is a 76-year-old man with a new lease on life and a new sense of purpose and a new kind of fledgling career as an undercover detective. … You have a lot of building blocks for future seasons. I told Netflix, I’ll do this forever if you want to keep paying me to write seasons of a show where Ted Danson is an undercover detective. I will sign up for this through 2050 if you let me.”
It’s likely that the only returning actors would be Danson, Estrada, and Ellis, so the season 1 supporting cast (including Stephanie Beatriz) probably won’t be back. This opens the door for a new cast, and it’s possible we will get some bigger-name actors who can play off Danson.
Season 2 can be fun with Charles getting more into the investigative game and a more serious case while still using his charm and how few think this elderly man can be so sharp to gain information. We can also see more of the bond between Ellis and Julie growing with the latter getting more screen time.
It’s a great bit of news as A Man on the Inside was one of the pleasant surprises of 2024 TV and fans are more than eager to see how a second season continues its story.
