Everything to know about Citadel: Diana, the Italian spy drama coming to Prime Video in October
By Sabrina Reed
In the mood for a spy thriller? You're in luck! Prime Video has you covered this month as its Citadel universe is finally expanding. You may remember the clip that was shown after the series, starring Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra, finished its freshman run. It was of a young woman with an asymmetrical haircut and a mysterious look about her. That was Diana, a Citadel agent we've come to learn is trapped behind enemy lines looking for a way out.
Her story is set to unfold in Citadel: Diana across six episode all set to release on Friday, Oct. 10 on the streamer. Though, if you're stateside, the series will be available to watch at 6 p.m. ET on Oct. 9! When we catch up with Diana, it's 2030 and it's been eight years since the collapse of Citadel. As such, her job as a mole was rendered obsolete and, likely, her mission has turned toward survival.
Though it's been nearly a decade, Diana hasn't stopped trying to find away to escape. When the opportunity to disappear presents itself, she leaps at it even if it means trusting someone she probably shouldn't--Edo Zani. He's the heir of Manticore's Italian branch and the son of the organization's head, Ettore Zani. Edo's father is in the midst of trying to rise to power. Ettore wants to lead the European families. You would think that wouldn't make Edo an ally but, unexpectedly, he does want to help her.
Citadel: Diana is set in a futuristic looking Milan and the backdrop of Italy is breathtaking. Get a look at the series in the trailer below!
What is Citadel: Diana about?
Aside from our lead's twisting tale of attempting to escape, the series will also cover why Diana joined Citadel in the first place. The trailer gives us a glimpse of her past, before she and her country changed drastically. Her parents were killed, and she was left in the dark about why. The need for answers is what drove her to take up a life as a spy. We learn three characteristics about her--she's strong, intelligent, and angry--and then the trailer spends the rest of its time highlight those facts.
As you'll note from the footage, unlike the flagship, this series is entirely in Italian not English. However, there will be an English dub available if you'd prefer not to read subtitles.
Do you need to watch Citadel before Diana's story?
While the series is a spinoff, it does function as a standalone entry in Citadel's universe. The story behind how and why Citadel fell at the hands of Manticore is told in the original show. If you want that backstory with full context, you'll need to watch Mason Kane and Nadia Sinh's side of the tale, but if you're fine with the cliff notes or going in without that knowledge, then you'll be fine.
Filming locations
Citadel: Diana is a true, blue excursion into Italy. Another country isn't playing stand-in. There's an entire action sequence that takes place in the Cretto di Gibellina, the land artwork by Alberto Burri, in Sicily. Per Italy for Movies, filming locations included Lazio (Rome), Lombardia (Milan), and Lake Como. According to the Corriere Del Ticino, filming also took place at Lake Ceresio and in front of the Lugano Arte e Culture in Lugano, Switzerland. As well as on the San Gottardo and in Mendrisiotto.

De Angelis did most of the stunts seen in the stunning action sequences for the show. She worked closely with stunt coordinator Emiliano Novelli to capture Diana's fierce abilities in the field. This was done through intensive strength training, martial arts, and choreography. She spoke of the experience at Prime Video Presents: Trailblazers:
"I went through four months of training, I wanted to be able to do most of my stunts. I have a past as a gymnast, so when I had the chance to do something that felt natural to me, I did. We don't get the chance as much in Italy, as an Italian actress, to perform action and to be a part of something this big and challenging. I really saw it as an opportunity of growth for myself. I wanted to kick ass, so I did it – Italian style!"
Watch De Angelis' Diana confront her opponent in the Cretto di Gibellina and while traversing a zip line, gun blazing!
