Criminal Minds fans have been clamoring for Matthew Gray Gubler's return to the franchise since the revival series Criminal Minds: Evolution got the greenlight. The flagship had only been off air for two years by the time the Paramount+ original debuted on streaming with the majority of its beloved cast but Gubler wasn't a part of the show and still has yet to make a cameo. The crime drama will have a third season so there's hope yet but the revival isn't where the actor has his eyes set.

TVLine reports that Gubler has been tapped to lead Einstein, a procedural that's been given a pilot order by CBS. This is broadcast's third attempt at bring an American adaptation of the German dramedy of the same name about Einstein's great grandson. CBS' version comes from the mind of Monk's creator Andy Breckman and is executive produced by Randy Zisk.

Gubler plays Lew, a professor whose popularity precedes him at Princeton. However, he's prone to not showing up for class, but he's tenured so there's that. Described as irreverent and misguided, it's no wonder that his apparent "bad boy antics" land him in a spot of trouble. Thank goodness he's brilliant! His genius is what puts him into a position to be of service to a local police detective. She has puzzling cases to solve and he's just the man to help. In doing so, Lew may just find the purpose and direction he so desperately needs.

CBS has been on a development spree. They have comedies and dramas in the works. It's a constant churning, factory of ideas over there which isn't surprising since the network is home to some of the most-watched and loved shows on broadcast.

Einstein is the second procedural looking to find its place on CBS' roster. A take on Van Helsing is in development as well. The eponymously named drama, being written by Jonathan Lee (Lockerbie), would be a modern iteration of Dr. Abraham Van Helsing's story set in New York City. True to the network's brand of procedurals, he'd be working alongside an FBI agent. Mina Harker, who also happens to be Van Helsing's ex, investigates the most harrowing of cases that plague the city and he assists her in finding the culprits.

Based on these two series, it does look like CBS is trying to launch a procedural that pairs a consultant with a member of law enforcement. Currently, Elsbeth is the only one on their line-up and they've seen much success with the Carrie Preston-led howdunnit.
