Shemar Moore probably won't return to Criminal Minds with SWAT continuing (but he should!)
With Criminal Minds: Evolution in production for season 3, we’re looking forward to seeing the returning characters that make up the current iteration of the Behavioral Analysis Unit. While there is no official confirmation if we will see some familiar faces due to scheduling issues, we know one person who may not return is Shemar Moore.
Moore played Agent Derek Morgan on Criminal Minds since the pilot before he left the show in season 11. Morgan left the BAU after the birth of his son, deciding to focus on caring for his new family. However, he would make a couple of appearances on the show afterward, but the actor has been busy with his hit show, SWAT. The CBS series had its back-and-forth regarding whether it would be canceled, though, which could have opened the door for his return.
The show faced cancellation after season six, but then it was renewed for one final season. However, SWAT was then renewed for season eight in the middle of filming for season seven. So due to still being part of SWAT, it is unlikely that Moore would have time schedule-wise to appear in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3.
However, we would love to see Moore appear on the show again. Morgan was such a huge part of the BAU, and even if he had a quick cameo talking to Penelope Garcia, who he was close to during the original series run, it would mean so much to fans to get to see him make an appearance.
Moore did recently say that he would be open to returning to Criminal Minds: Evolution if he had the invitation. It’s not certain that this will happen due to scheduling for his show and the production for Criminal Minds, but if it did, fans would be thrilled to have him back!
Criminal Minds: Evolution has been following the BAU as they deal with the aftermath of chasing a serial killer who created a cyber network of killers, something that was recently put on the backburner, but could make a resurgence during season three.
The current cast consists of Joe Mantegna, Paget Brewster, A.J. Cook, Aisha Tyler, Adam Rodriguez, Kirsten Vangsness, and Ryan-James Hatanaka.
Matthew Gray Gubler and Daniel Henney have not appeared in their previous roles as Dr. Spencer Reid and Matthew Simmons, respectively. Still, hopefully, they could also make a return appearance in addition to Moore.
Criminal Minds: Evolution is available to watch on Paramount+.
