The CW aims to make Wednesdays appointment TV with Wild Cards and Good Cop/Bad Cop
By Sabrina Reed
We all know The CW has been in its struggle era since Nextar became the majority owner and nearly all of the series that made the network feel like home were cancelled or final seasoned. But some of us are still holding out hope that the channel that once dared to defy will defy the odds if given enough time to find its new voice.
Yes, there's been an abundance of sports content and the addition of WWE NXT but The CW hasn't written off scripted programming all together. My personal favorite of the series they've tried to launch (and that has been successful!) is Wild Cards.
Hot off her run as Toni Topaz on the iconic Riverdale, Vanessa Morgan slipped into the role of Max Mitchell. The charming con woman with a penchant for disguises and accents is a perfect showcase for Morgan's talents including her fantastic comedic timing. She acts opposite Giacomo Gianniotti who plays Cole Ellis. The detective is the grump to her sunshine but he's got a kind heart and knows what he's doing in the field.
Together, Morgan and Gianniotti--along with showrunner Michael Konyves and the team behind the procedural--gave CW their second scripted hit of this era. Ever since the season 1 finale, fans have been clamoring for the show's return and we're finally on the road to it as it's been announced season 2 premieres Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 8 p.m. ET.
While that's exciting news all on its own, the reveal that the Leighton Meester-led procedural Good Cop/Bad Cop will be joining the series on Wednesdays kicked my excitement up a notch!
Good Cop/Bad Cop takes place in the Pacific Northwest and follows two siblings, Lou (Meester) and Henry (Luke Cook), who work together at the Eden Vale Police Department. They're a detective team with a complicated dynamic not just with each other but with their father Big Hank (Clancy Brown), the police chief. As they investigate, the brother-sister duo known as an odd couple, must solve cases while dealing with a severe lack of resources and the colorful residents of their community.
Paired with Wild Cards, it looks like The CW is raring to make their Wednesday night block a must-watch for viewers that have been longtime fans of Morgan and Meester. It's the kind of bait that could work on TV lovers old enough to have experienced both Gossip Girl and Riverdale when they were airing. The actresses have gone down in television history for their iconic characters, I mean the incomparable Blair Waldorf and the charismatic Toni Topaz, sign me up!
Come Feb. 19, when Good Cop/Bad Cop premieres in the 9 p.m. ET slot, the network could find some more of the magic it's been missing since the end of the pre-Nexstar era. I hope you're seated because this Wednesday block will be appointment televsion.
