The Diplomat romances: Who is together by the end of season 2 (and who broke up)?
By Sabrina Reed
Spoilers ahead of The Diplomat season 2
Look, we all know that The Diplomat is a serious business, though quite funny, political thriller. Romance isn't the driving force of the series, it's not the point. We know! But that doesn't mean that we aren't deeply invested in the relationships that populate this Netflix original. They're so good but was there any progress made in season 2? Let's start with the "will they-won't they" romance!
Did Austin Dennison and Kate Wyler get together in The Diplomat season 2?
Relationship status: On the outs
Season 1 ended with Dennison and Kate on the precipice of crossing the line. She'd worn the red dress her husband Hal had been eyeing, but she'd done so for the Foreign Secretary. Had a car bomb not gone off in London with Hal, Stuart, and Ronnie caught in its wake, it's quite possible that the two would have tipped over the edge into an ill-advised romance.
But Kate froze Dennison out when she was worried that she was going to lose Hal and, though she apologized, it gave him some perspective. It didn't, however, stop him from sending heart eyes her way. No, those were gradually dimmed by Kate's handling of Roylin's involvement with the attack on the HMS Courageous. Dennison spent much of his time playing catch up in that regard and being pulled into the loop by Kate unexpectedly and with new, stunning information each time.
He'd wanted to come clean to the public about the debacle. First through a vote of no confidence that would have pushed Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge out of his position and could have led to Dennison rising to the role. But that failed due to the public's belief that Trowbridge is a hero for taking out Lenkov. Then, Dennison wanted to resign so he could tell the truth but it would have been career suicide and it turned out Trowbridge wasn't a part of the group of British citizens who attacked their own country in the hopes of keeping it from splintering.
The new plan, which would have required Trowbridge to eventually resign, got thrown out after the PM and Dennison had a chat with Vice President Grace Penn. She convinced Trowbridge that if he stayed quiet about what happened, he wouldn't have to resign at all. He could hold onto power. At the time, the Foreign Secretary and Kate didn't know that keeping silent benefited the VP because she was the mastermind behind Roylin's plan.
Seeing no other option but to fall in line, Dennison decided he wasn't going to undermine the PM any longer. He's supposed to be Trowbridge's lieutenant (or "leftenant" as the Brits say!), and he's going to be supporting him from now on. He told Kate in the season 2 finale, "Dreadnought," that their partnership was a mistake...all of it.
But, don't worry. This may only be a bump in the road. Stuart, early on in the season when he was feeling resentful toward Kate, alluded to Kate's unusually close relationship with Dennison while talking to Billie. While it was later walked back, such a statement is likely to come back into play at some point in season 3.
Did Kate and Hal Wyler get a divorce?
Relationship status: Still married
Divorce looks like it's off the table for Kate and Hal (for now), and I'm not just saying that because she was making a move to become Vice President before the end of the season 2 finale jettisoned that plan. Nearly losing Hal in the car bombing shook Kate and she was softer with him this season. The couple also got to work their magic more than once as she let Hal be her vault of information regarding Roylin and they schmoozed to perfection when they had to work crowds at parties and dinners.
Before the close of the season, Kate's friend Carole made an excellent point. The ambassador never sees when her husband is behaving. She only seems to acknowledge when he's been "bad" but the truth is Kate might actually not like Hal when he's good. That's certainly something she's going to have to unpack, however, Hal was very, very bad in the finale, so Kate might bypass Carole's words entirely. He did, after all, accidentally kill the president when he chose to tell him about the VP's involvement in the attack against the UK instead of telling Secretary of State Miguel Ganon like he and Kate discussed.
Grace Penn becoming president is entirely his fault and now he and Kate are in a serious pickle. Divorce could enter the conversation again in season 3 because of what he did. But what's guaranteed is that as soon as Kate sees him, she's going to blow her top. She might reach heights of anger that we've yet to see from her which is saying something since she launched herself at him in feral fury in season 1.
Did Stuart Hayford and Eidra Park get back together?
Relationship status: Still broken up
Eidra ended her romance with Stuart in season 1, and they remained broken up in season 2 but it's clear they're not over on The Diplomat. For example, Eidra was the one most invested in whether Stuart was going to survive the bombing, and she also told him the tragic news about Ronnie when he was awake enough to learn it.
Part of the plot in the second season was Kate and Hal finding out the two had been together and Kate stepping her foot in it before learning they'd parted ways. Eidra had an unhinged response to checking in on Stuart's mental state at Billie's request. She had an agent assess him without his knowledge and, though she certainly didn't direct that agent to be a honey pot and sleep with her ex, she was wrong to do so.
Stuart moved past that violation and eventually came to the conclusion that he wanted to give his relationship with Eidra a go. She, however, said no. In a great scene, Eidra explained to Stuart that he needed to stop talking to her about their romance while at work and, through their other conversations, it was implied that part of their issue isn't that she's afraid to commit, it's that he is making professional choices that don't factor her in and that leave them in limbo.
Personally, I think Eidra as a CIA agent deals with uncertainty and hidden agendas for the vast majority of her day so she wants there to be certainty in her love life. Stuart not knowing whether he's going to be moving to D.C. to help Kate campaign for Vice President complicated matters in a way that left Eidra feeling like she didn't have any control. Not to mention, there seems to also be an implication that Stuart doesn't respect Eidra's job as much as his own.
I'm not referring to how she carries it out but rather that it's important to her and that she is just as career-focused as he is. I say this because he's just figured out that she's right, it's not fair to her to have to hash out their problems while she's working. And he only caught on to that fact after he told her that if she didn't stop running from commitment that she'd wind up alone in life. He said this while they were at work.
Eidra and Stuart will likely get back together at some point but they have a lot they need to sort through in their relationship including how they handle their disagreements.
