A Man on the Inside has made its debut on Netflix, introducing us to Ted Danson's Charles. The series, created by Michael Schur, drops into Charles' life a year after his wife has passed. His daughter has increasingly grown worried about him as he distances himself from her. In his grief, Charles has lost his purpose but he finds it again and it's all thanks to an ad in the paper.
While reading the classifieds, he comes across a private investigator's notice. Julie (Lilah Richcreek Estrada), the PI, needs someone Charles' age to infiltrate a senior living community. She'd been approached by a client who requested help finding their family heirloom which had been stolen. On the case, but initially lacking the skillset required, Charles throws himself into the search for the item, and the culprit, and along the way he makes friends and finds the joy he'd been missing.
What viewers may not know is that A Man on the Inside is actually inspired by a true story. It's based on the 2020 documentary The Mole Agent directed by Maite Alberdi. Set in El Monte, Chile, the doc follows a man named Sergio who's been hired by Rómulo, a private investigator who has tasked him with going undercover in a nursing home. Rómulo has a client that is concerned for her mother, Sonia. She alleges that Sonia is being mistreated by the staff. It's up to Sergio to investigate her claims.
Despite the serious allegations being looked into in The Mole Agent, the film itself has been praised for its warmth, humor, and tenderness. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, a nod that's a testament to its depth and heart. If you're looking to stream the movie, you're in luck!
