Spoilers ahead of FBI: International season 4 episode 6
We've only had Supervisory Special Agent Wesley "Wes" Mitchell on FBI: International for six episodes but he's already become a highlight of the series as has his partnership with Special Agent Cameron Vo. The dynamic duo are scene stealers together, especially when they've chosen to be vulnerable. Often we see Wes opening up to Cameron about past tragedies and the episode, "They Paid More," was no different after the two were nearly blown up by an IED during a case.
Cameron, working hard to shake off the event but still clearly shook, mentioned that she almost ended up on Wes' arm in reference to the badge numbers of fallen agents that he had tattooed. He assured her they have back up to help prevent that from happening and teased her about the training agent that recent academy graduates are assigned, nodding to their past in Seattle. Wes has her back just like he knows she has his.
It's likely because of there bond that he opens up to her even when he's not immediately comfortable with it. Later in the episode, as Cameron was activating drones, she asked him about how Montrose went sideways. It was this operation that led to Alana Greggs' death. She was Wes' Supervisory Special Agent who'd been killed in the line of duty.
Alana died after Wes froze during a pivotal moment. He'd been working a search and seizure at a gated complex that had turned into a full day stand-off. It was a drug bust, a big one. They, however, weren't moving forward because a man named Cerullo told them that he'd rigged the complex to explode. The team didn't know if he was bluffing, but Wes had a CI that he'd been working for two years. He trusted his intel that there were no civilians in the complex and that Cerullo was lying. They breached and things went left.
Wes and his partner found Cerullo but the intel was bad. The man was going to bring the building down along with his young children. Wes didn't act, he froze for a second, and when Alana rolled in, Cerullo shot her. He clipped her femoral artery, and she bled out. They couldn't get her help in time. Wes did end up shooting Cerullo but he had to do so in front of the man's kids and his death resulted in the case falling apart because they needed his testimony. This added another layer of guilt to Wes' grief.
