Will Gibbs kill his wife's murderer in NCIS: Origins season 1? (Speculation)
NCIS: Origins has done a great job showing us how Leroy Jethro Gibbs got his start at the NIS before we met him in the original series. The series starts mere months after having lost his wife Shannon and their daughter Kelly, he is still clearly a man in mourning. So will we see him kill the man responsible, Pedro Hernandez?
With over 20 years of episodes worth of NCIS having aired, it’s almost difficult to remember the timeline of events. Plus, they never directly say how it was long after the murders of Shannon and Kelly that Gibbs would get his own justice.
Based on the NCIS season 3 finale episodes, Gibbs had been in a coma for a little over two weeks after an attack while he was in Kuwait. In NCIS: Origins, they show that right after getting the news about the murders, Gibbs’s unit was under attack and he was willing to die because he felt he had nothing to live for.
The original NCIS did hint at Gibbs feeling this way and they also showed that when Gibbs spoke to Agent Mike Franks, who was investigating the murders, he had left the room to go to the bathroom, leaving the case file on his desk.
When NCIS: Origins premiered, Gibbs’s father, Jackson, asked his son about the investigation and if they caught the killer. All he got in response was that the guy had escaped to Mexico. Now we don’t know for sure if at this point Gibbs had already killed him.
However, in the original NCIS, it was hinted that when Gibbs saw the file on the case he wasn’t an agent yet. Franks referred to him as “Gunney” instead of his usual moniker, “Probie.” Now is it possible that they could switch things up and still show Hernandez’s murder?
The NCIS: Origins episode "Blue Bayou" (airing Dec. 16) will focus on Gibbs' first Christmas without his wife and daughter, while also depicting what led him to become an NIS agent. It is likely we could get flashbacks of what happened with Hernandez, if he did, in fact, kill him before the series premiere. Or, it is always possible his beginnings as an agent were separate from what happened with Hernandez.
Either way, if they do decide to switch things up and show Hernandez’s murder take place during the show timeline, it would make for an interesting finale, whether as a midseason or a season finale. However, since Gibbs could have been lying to his dad when he said the killer was in Mexico, it could be Hernandez is already in dead.
We’re looking forward to finding out for sure how they deal with the Hernandez situation in the series, especially as we get closer to the middle of the season.
