Would Alex Munday be in a Charlie's Angel reboot? Lucy Liu gives her answer!
Charlie’s Angels was one of the more notable cop shows of the 1970s. The concept was simple as three female cops (originally Kate Jackson, Jaclyn Smith and Farrah Fawcett) were recruited by the mysterious Charles Towsend (who only spoke via a communicator phone) as private eyes. The show was a hit that lasted five seasons with a few cast changes, but viewers enjoyed seeing these lovely ladies involved in some wild escapades.
In 2000, the film joined the trend of TV shows adapted into movies, starring Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu and directed by McG. It was a huge hit that spawned a 2003 sequel, Full Throttle. However, the sequel failed to do as well at the box office, and plans for future films were canceled.
The property has seen a few attempted revivals over the years. In 2011, ABC tried a new series, with the turn of the Angels being ex-cons and given a chance at redemption. The show failed in the ratings and was canceled after seven episodes.
In 2019, Elizabeth Banks wrote and directed a new big-screen adaptation starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska. Despite big hype, the movie was a critical and box office flop that killed any franchise chances.
Still, the property has a name value and there's always the possibility it could return and one of the original leading ladies is open for it.
Lucy Liu on Charlie’s Angels reboot chances
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight to promote her new action comedy Red One, Lucy Liu was reminded that 2025 will be the 25th anniversary of the movie and the chances of a reboot. That also led to whether she'd pop in as her character, the genius Alex Munday. Liu shared:
"I don’t hear much of anything until it actually happens. I’m never going to say no to that. But I would be surprised to hear anything that gets done or undone. You just never know until it happens."
As Liu says, there’s no word on any reboot. However, there is a trend for some past movies of the 1990s and 2000s to get sequels, as evidenced by Bad Boys: Ride or Die and the Ghostbusters sequels. The idea of a new take on Charlie’s Angels would make sense with the idea of the original stars popping in to provide a link and maybe show the agency expanding with other teams.
Liu added how the original films worked thanks to their nice humor and the bond of the stars.
"Being in a movie where there are three women together that were strong and also having fun and just sort of taking a piss. That’s just sort of what it was. It wasn’t supposed to be anything that serious."
Her words do indicate a problem many had with the 2019 movie, which played the property too straight with a “girl power” message that marred the tone. The property is better played as camp like the 2000 movie and the fun vibe is what made it so popular. The movies still have a good following and the three stars might all be willing to cameo in order to pass the torch to a new pack of Angels.
As of now, there’s no confirmation of any Charlie’s Angels reboot coming, but fans can be hopeful that Liu’s words indicate these Angels can fly once more one day.
