Cross, one of our highly anticipated releases for November, will make its debut on Prime Video with a story familiar to fans of the books by James Patterson. Aldis Hodge plays the titular D.C. homicide detective and forensic psychologist who has a knack for catching serial killers.

Our first brush with Alex Cross comes in the aftermath of great loss. He's a widower navigating life without his wife by his side, being a good father to their kids, and solving cases while trying not to let the weight of grief crush him. It helps that his unwavering best friend, John Sampson, is also his partner in the field. He's going to need him as this first outing for the series involves a sadistic killer and a threat from Cross' past that could up end everything he's built both professionally and personally.

What book is the first season based on?

Prime Video's Cross won't be based on any one book in the James Patterson series. As Americans Undercover previously reported, showrunner and creator Ben Watkins created a whole new story for these characters. This adaptation seeks to do justice by the source material through opening the world up and including story elements that weren't present in the films. Watkins explained why in an interview with Entertainment Weekly:

"I said I was not going to do any of the seasons based on the books. I thought it was really important that we give fans a new offering, that we honor the characters and the world so that they would feel like they were getting what they signed up for, but also then give them a new story. They'll get what those books feel like."

His approach is one that Patterson prefers as he isn't an author who wants adaptations of his work to be dependent on the books they're based on. Catch a sneak peek of Cross below:

Will there be a Cross season 2?

Yes! The Prime Video original wasn't billed as a limited series and Amazon greenlit it for a second season before season 1 has even premiered. Jeanine Mason, Wes Chatham, and Matthew Lillard will join the cast for season 2. The plot hasn't been released, however, Watkins has shared that each season of the show will get to a "closed chapter," so they won't bleed into one another. They're self-contained mystery seasons with a clear beginning and end.
