Fans of the vigilante action thriller franchise The Equalizer will be excited to know that there is more coming, thanks to an interview with the man himself, Denzel Washington! What do we know about any updates regarding the franchise and we will see him return for more?
In an in-depth interview with Esquire, Washington talked about his career and focused on how he's chosen which roles to take and which roles to come back to. He talked about the desire fans had to continue seeing him “go get the bad guys.” Washington said he had, “come to realize that the Equalizer films are for me, too, because they’re for the people.”
"I told them I would do another Equalizer, and we’re doing four and five. More people are happy about that—people love those daggone Equalizers. "Washington
While he did not get into detail about the ins and outs, he did mention that they were working on the fourth and fifth sequels of the franchise, which is great news. In the original film, which was released in 2014, he helped introduce audiences to a man named Robert McCall, who had retired from his previous work in the DIA before coming back to help a young girl who was brutalized by Russian mobsters.
Washington's work continued in 2018 with The Equalizer 2, which saw McCall out for revenge after the murder of a woman named Susan Plummer, who was described as a former colleague and dear friend.
The Equalizer 3 was released in 2023 and McCall was then focused on helping those who have been oppressed by people out to hurt them. This film was set in Southern Italy and he returned as a man attempting to help friends who find themselves under the control of crime bosses in the area.
Originally, director Antoine Fuqua had stated that the third film was supposed to be a conclusion, but never completely ruled out the idea of more films. Now it looks like fans will get to see more of Robert McCall!
The film franchise was based on the original series, which ran from 1985 to 1989. Currently, Queen Latifah stars in the CBS series The Equalizer, where she portrays Robyn McCall. The show is currently in its fifth season.
Even though there is no information yet on the film series' future and the upcoming sequels, it does look like we will still have plenty of Washington to look forward to in the years to come! We’ll keep an eye out for any more news about The Equalizer film franchise as we learn more.
