Despite Cross season 1's ending the Prime Video series isn't done with Maria's story

Spoilers ahead of Cross season 1
Besides the mystery surrounding The Fanboy and finding Shannon Witmer, Cross' first season was focused on the homicide detective's grief. It'd only been a little over a year since his wife Maria's death when we were brought into his life. He had no idea who'd murdered her but as the season progressed, the instigator of the crime started to slowly be revealed.
By the time we got to the finale, the truth was explosive. Miss Nancy, Damon's piano teacher and advisor, had plotted revenge along with her son, Peter. She'd done so out of her own grief which had twisted into murderous intent. While she wasn't the one who took Maria's life, and neither was Peter, she did orchestrate the murder.
Miss Nancy had done so out of vengeance. She blamed Alex for the death of her daughter, Deidre, though as she explained herself it became clear that much of her motivation came from immense guilt and an inability to handle her own part in Deidre's death. Her foster daughter took the fall for a crime Peter had committed. Miss Nancy had convinced her to do so thinking that because Deidre was a white young woman that the justice system would be more lenient on her but everything that could go wrong did.
Alex, in his testimony during the trial, said that therapy wouldn't be able to "fix" Deidre. He'd written off the idea that with rehabilitation she could one day no longer be a danger to anyone. Miss Nancy was convinced that it was his words that were the final nail in the coffin as Deidre was sentenced to life in prison. While there she'd been abused by a guard and, having lost her ability to see a way forward that wasn't filled with pain, Deidre committed suicide.
Miss Nancy wanted Alex to feel the pain that she did so she went after his family. She was even willing to kill one of his kids which shook Peter. But, in the end, she killed herself by setting herself on fire. The whole incident, and learning the truth of why Maria was murdered, brought Alex closure but it doesn't mean Cross is done with this story. There's still the mystery of who shot Maria to deal with which showrunner Ben Watkins spoke to in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
"In the books, John Sampson [Isaiah Mustafa] finds out that it's someone else and actually takes care of it for Alex. So I wanted to keep that alive, and also for the plot logic, I couldn't have it be Miss Nancy who did the killing. In in the writers' room we did talk about whether or not it was her son, but in my mind there's somebody else out there. After season 1, the whole point is for Alex to deal with the grief. He should not be worried anymore about who actually pulled the trigger. He should be worried about his own healing."
So, while Alex is moving on, Cross won't be. It's unclear whether the second season will pick up the plot surrounding the shooter or if this mystery will be put on the back burner for now. But we do know that when we are brought back to it, the story will follow John Sampson's quest to fully bring an end the nightmare his best friend and family have been subjected to because of another person's grief.
