Keri Russell's totally relatable response to Allison Janney joining The Diplomat season 2
Season 2 of Netflix’s The Diplomat is just a week away from dropping and we’re as excited to see some famous faces as actress Keri Russell, who plays the role of Ambassador Kate Wyler on the show.
While speaking to People Magazine during PaleyFest, she described how she felt learning actress Allison Janney would be appearing as the Vice President in the second season, whom Russell’s character is being primed to take over the job.
She admitted in the interview she had been nervous since she was such a fan of Janney and described her as being “awesome and so good.” Janney actually had also worked with showrunner Debora Cahn, who was a writer on The West Wing, in which the actress appeared.
""I love [Janney]. There's a scene she does in Primary Colors – that movie is so good – where she does this physical comedy fall up the stairs. So I think I was a little nervous, but she's everything you want her to be. She's gracious and funny and smart and cool.""

The second season of The Diplomat will follow the aftermath of a car bombing that almost took the life of Wyler’s husband, Hal (Rufus Sewell), and also threatened the lives of three individuals, two of whose fates are yet unknown. A trailer for the season showed Deputy Chief of Mission Stuart Hayford survived, but we still are unsure of MP Merritt Grove or Office Clerk Ronnie.
While we hope that Ronnie didn’t die in the blast, since they were so close to the car when the bomb went off — and we see a casket in the trailer — there’s always a chance we did lose a favorite character on the show. This could lead to big implications for Kate, especially with everything else she has going on surrounding the investigation she is attempting.
Wyler had also discovered who may have been behind an attack that preceded the show, which brought Wyler’s character to the United Kingdom. She had just figured out that Prime Minister Trowbridge had likely engineered an attack against his own military, something she would need to be careful investigating.
With the possibility of government officials being behind the attacks, Wyler will have a hard time trusting anyone with the investigation.
Vice President Grace Penn’s arrival will also shake things up for Wyler considering the possibility that Kate might replace her as Vice President. Seeing Russell and Janney go head to head will be exciting for fans of the show and both actresses!
All six episodes of The Diplomat will arrive on Netflix on Thursday, Oct. 31. Make sure to stay tuned to Americans Undercover for more coverage!
