The Diplomat season 2 trailer reveals who survived last season's attack (and who is still unaccounted for)

If you thought last season of The Diplomat was intense, the Netflix original's second outing may necessitate lying down. Remember, Kate Wyler and crew are coming off the heels of an explosive attack that threatened to make the ambassador a widow. While she was ready to part with her husband Hal, him being blasted to kingdom come wasn't what she was looking to see happen. Divorce papers being signed would have sufficed.

With an actor like Rufus Sewell in the role, there was skepticism on whether Kate would really lose Hal especially in that manner just after she learned Prime Minister Trowbridge may be responsible for an attack on his own military to instigate a war. The teaser trailer for season 2, which introduced viewers to Allison Janney's Vice President Grace Penn, gave away Hal's fate. He's very much alive! But the official trailer does give us a glimpse at his time in the hospital as well as reveal another survivor.

When The Diplomat picks back up, in typical fashion for this married duo, they're privy to what's going on with each other and still able to have a lightness about them. At the hospital, Kate asks Hal if he can hear her and his answer is no. I laughed. It's the same when he asks about Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison and he says that he would have left himself for him, too. Got to love these two!

But aside from the quips, it's nice to see Deputy Chief of Mission Stuart Hayford is fine as well though banged up like Hal at the start of the season. Who we don't see, however, is MP Merritt Grove and Ronnie the office clerk. While I don't expect Grove to be alive, I do hope we didn't lose Ronnie.

They of the nice suits and bowties was a nice piece of the team and it's always a bit funny when the older, more experienced staff members interact with the younger ones who are hoping to one day be in their position. But the aerial shot of the casket covered by the American flag and then Stuart holding Kate responsible for a tactical error that was deadly, isn't reassuring.

iIn the aftermath of the blast, The Diplomat will be moving full steam ahead into the undercover investigation of Trowbridge which CIA agent Eidra Park isn't thrilled about since, as she explained to Kate, the last time a prime minister was investigated NATO was nearly dissolved. Add the intensity of the conspiracy they're trying to prove on top of the VP clearly knowing President Rayburn is trying to replace her with Kate and you've got a great season!
