With how far back NCIS: Origins takes place in the past, it would make sense that we might not see every one of the current NCIS cast based on how old characters are, where they grew up, or whether they were born yet. But the newest episode of NCIS: Origins just brought in a young, familiar face!

During episode 6, "Incognito," there was a scene where Mike Franks and Cliff Wheeler went to speak to someone in the FBI. They were looking for a suspect in the case they were investigating, as it was related to intel involving schematics for a tomahawk missile. As they spoke, the FBI contact got the attention of another agent, who he called Tobias. Even though a last name was not used, it’s likely this is a young version of Joe Spano’s Tobias Fornell. In this iteration, he is played by actor Lucas Dixon.

In the series premiere of NCIS, Fornell and Gibbs seemed to meet for the first time during the case. However, they had history already. This was due to them both having been married to the same woman, Diane Sterling, who was later killed during NCIS’s run. So we will have to see how the new series leans on their acquaintanceship.

The young version of Fornell is clearly new to the job, as he has a different kind of personality than the older Fornell. With his introduction, we could see him and Gibbs eventually meet. While Gibbs was not in this particular scene, it is a nice setup to get to know another face we are familiar with from the original series in the franchise.

Even though it is unclear from the timeline when Gibbs would eventually meet, and marry, Diane, the NCIS: Origins audience meeting Fornell could hint that we will eventually meet her character as well. There’s plenty of characters we would love to see on the show, but as it stands, Fornell makes the most sense to be one of the first introductions on the show.

The series has been doing a good job of introducing us to new characters while also not ignoring the threads that will eventually tie into what happens later in NCIS, as we saw when the FBI contact mentioned that Franks hasn’t spent enough time in Mexico. This is where Franks would eventually retire.

We will have to wait an extra week for a new episode, as the next episode of NCIS: Origins won’t air until Monday, Nov. 25. For now, you can catch up on previous episodes on Paramount+.
