It seems the team behind The Agency deserves a round of applause as they've managed to secure a season 2 pick-up with only two episodes of the spy thriller having premiered so far. Considering the show's rating numbers, an early renewal makes an abundance of sense. Coming in at 5.1M global viewers with its opening salvo, it's the network's most streamed new series ever. What drew this size of an audience in? A combination of factors!
Showtime's latest program is an American adaptation of the widely popular French series, Le Bureau des Legendes, otherwise known as The Bureau. The show follows the same premise of an undercover agent being brought home after years living under another identity. His return is complicated by his love affair with a woman he'd gotten involved with during his mission, and the disappearance of a fellow spy that could lead to a geopolitical crisis.
The Agency follows Martian's life upon returning from his mission, his ill-advised romance with Samia Zahir--a woman he may not know as well as he thinks--the mysterious operation Felix, and a spy with the codename Coyote being in the wind. The series has a stacked cast with Michael Fassbender in the lead role, film icon Richard Gere playing the CIA's Chief of London Station, Jeffrey Wright as the Director of Operations, Dominic West recurring as the CIA Director, and Jodie Turner-Smith in the role of Samia.
Add in a compelling story in a spy thriller that explores what it means to abandon your identity in the name of your country's interests and safety, and you've got a series that people will want to return to week-to-week whether they stream it on Fridays via Paramount+ with Showtime or watch it via cable on Sundays at 10 p.m. ET.
The show's early renewal is an encouraging sign that it may have the same longevity as its predecessor The Bureau which ran for five seasons from 2015-2020. It's early days yet but so far The Agency has the kind of intrigue that'll could keep us invested for years to come. The renewal also means that when the first season ends on Jan. 24, 2025, we can anticipate the story to continue in a coming season 2, dispelling any concern that if the season finishes on a cliffhanger we may never know what happens next.
