Kate Wyler is stuck as The Diplomat! Netflix has greenlit a third season for the hit political thriller
By Sabrina Reed
Kate Wyler may want off the crazy ride she's been on since being put in an ambassadorship that she didn't want, but she's not going to be going anywhere anytime soon. Netflix has renewed the Keri Russell-led political thriller The Diplomat for a third season!
The announcement is coming three weeks before the show debuts its sophomore outing which immediately picks up in the aftermath of the bomb that caught her husband Hal, the MP Merritt Grove, her Deputy Chief of Mission Stuart Hayford, and their office clerk Ronnie in its blast. The threat of widowhood is enough to contend with but there's also her nuclear realization that the Prime Minister of Great Britain may have launched an attack against his own troops to instigate a war.
Will Kate have time to catch her breath? Not likely! She's got an investigation to convince CIA agent Eidra Park to lead since "the call is coming from inside the house" where the British government is concerned. Not to mention her complicated feelings for Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison who has been trying to keep a lid on PM Trowbridge but this whole situation is so beyond the pale that Kate has no idea who to trust.
Then there's Vice President Grace Penn. President Rayburn wants Kate to replace her and the VP definitely isn't in the dark about that fact. The ambassador's life is a mess, World War III could be around the corner, and did I state that Kate never wanted to be here in the first place? If only she'd been listened to and been allowed to get on a plane to Kabul. But, alas.
It's anyone's guess how this will all lead to what's set to happen in season 3, but we do know that filming is already underway. Deadline reports that production is taking place in London and New York this go around. Netflix tweeted out a behind the scenes picture of Russell with Big Ben in front of her.
The Diplomat creator and showrunner Debora Cahn teased what's ahead for Kate after season 2. Apparently, it's going to be a nightmare of a time: "Season 3 flips the chessboard. Kate lives the particular nightmare that is getting what you want."
Curiouser and curiouser. I wonder what it is that Kate believes she wants in season 2 and gets. We'll have to watch and see. Season 2 premieres all six episodes on Thursday, Oct. 31 on Netflix. With season 3 filming, we may not have to wait long for its release in 2025.
