FBI: Most Wanted returned with its sixth season without one of the Fugitive Task Force's key members--Special Agent Sheryll Barnes. She was in D.C. during the premiere, "Aquarium Drinker," and we can't expect to see her as soon as episode 2, "Varsity Blues," but don't worry. Another cast shake-up isn't hitting the FBI universe. Fans aren't going to have to say goodbye to Roxy Sternberg, we're just going to be in for a wait for her return.

Barnes is in the nation's capital because she and Charlotte got a divorce. The two will be splitting custody of their kids, she's getting her family settled and adjusted to their new normal. The reason why she'll be gone longer than an episode has more to do with Sternberg than it does Barnes.

Roxy Sternberg's absence on FBI: Most Wanted season 6 explained

The actress was pregnant during the filming of FBI: Most Wanted season 5. Her May due date was butting up right against production for the season's last episodes. So much so that Sternberg joked in an interview with The Wrap that there could be a delivery on set (there wasn't!). She also shared: "I’m going to make it to the end, hopefully, this season. And come back maybe a little bit slightly behind [for next season]."

That's exactly what's happening. Season 6 is getting started without Sternberg but it won't be too long before she's back on-screen. In fact, it'll be episode 4 as she revealed on X with photos of her, Keisha Castle-Hughes, and Shantel VanSanten on-set together giving Charlie's Angels energy.

What to know about Sheryll Barnes' return to the Fugitive Task Force

FBI: Most Wanted's showrunner David Hudgins shared what viewers can expect from Barnes' arc this season and what will happen in episode 4, "Pig Butchering." He told TV Insider the following:

"...I think the story for Barnes this year is really one about identity. Who am I? First, she was a cop then she was an agent, then she was a wife, then she was a mother, and now it’s sort of a bit of, who am I? What am I going to do post-divorce? Move on. So we’ve got some great stories with her as she explores all that leading to a big decision she has to make near the end of the season about exactly who I am and what I want to do and what makes me happy. But it’s a fun ride along the way. Barnes is single and we wanted to have some fun with that."

Does Barnes being single mean she meets someone new this season? Yes! Hudgins teased that the episode he was working on at the time of the interview will have her stepping out of her "traditional mom role" when she meets somebody. But as for episode 4, it'll focus on pig butchering which isn't about actual pigs.

The phrase refers to online scams that target people by encouraging them to invest their lifesavings into cryptocurrency but the result will be the victim losing everything to the scammer. Hudgins said Barnes will get a whiff of what's going on and immediately take action.

"The basic story is these young girls get kidnapped and forced to work in a call center and Barnes gets a call from this girl and coming off the experience she’s had with missing her children, she’s just a dog with a bone. She wants to go get this girl, and she starts the story by doing it on her own, which causes conflict with Remy, but in the end, she rescues this girl. It’s just a really emotional episode."

As you can see, Sheryll Barnes' return for FBI: Most Wanted season 6 is going to be a strong showcase for Roxy Sternberg. "Pig Butchering" will air on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 10 p.m. ET on CBS. The procedural will skip Nov. 5 due to coverage of Election Day.
